Meeting Special Needs and Problems
Compounding meets specific and unique patient needs and problems by providing:
- Optimal dose- Eliminating unnecessary waste and expense and allowing the patient to achieve desired therapeutic goals.
- Change in dosage form - For example, a patient who is unable to swallow may prefer a lozenge, lollipop, transdermal preparation, suppository, etc. Alternative routes of administration- decreasing incidence of side effects (i.e. GI upset) or avoiding "first-pass" liver metabolism.
- Elimination of sugar, dyes, flavors- Also elimination of preservatives, lactose and other excipients which are not tolerated or may caouse an allergic reaction. Combination of multiple medications- into a single preparation (stability permitting) for more convenient use and improved compliance.
Do not think your specific problem is too unique to be properly treated. With compounding, the possibilities are endless!
