Hydrocortisone-Lidocaine Suppositories for Persistent Hemorrhoids
Jerry Turner, M.D., Columbus, MS
"Hydrocaine Suppositories" are a compounded medication containing hydrocortisone 50mg and lidocaine 120mg in a unique dosage form called a "rectal rocket." I have prescribed these for at least ten patients with severe, persistant hemorrhoids, and have had a 80-90% success rate. The suppositories have provided the patient with complete relief within three nights. The unique design allows for the medication to remain at the site for several hours, unlike the commercially available products that are lost into the colon and are not available at the site of the hemorrhoid. This specially prepared medication has allowed my patients to return to normal activities at a faster rate than when "conventional therapy" was used.
About the Rectal Rocket:
The name "rectal rocket" refers to the unique design of the dosage form. It is tapered for easy insertion, but flares out at the bottom, so that the end portion of the suppository remains in contact with the anal sphincter and the external perianal area. (There is even a "slit" which allows the patient to expel gas without eliminating the suppository.) The "rectal rocket" provides the benefits of both an internal suppository and an external cream or ointment and has the added advantage of increased contact time with the affected tissue.
This is just one of the many unique dosage forms we can compound for you at Pharmacy Innovations. We work with both the patient and the physician to create a custom compounded medication that meets the patient's specific needs.
