Omega-3 Oils for Pets | Print |  E-mail

Like a human's diet, our pet's standard diets are "overdosed" with omega-6 fatty acids, a.k.a. the bad fats. While certain pet food manufacturers have begun to add omega-3 fats to their dog and cat food, these additions are not pharmacologically significant to cause real benefits. These diets may be considered "better" than the other pet foods, but not ideal. Further, many of these pet foods add an omega-3 fatty acid known as ALA (Alpha Linoleic Acid), which is found in flax seed oil, vegetables and some vegetable oils. In humans, ALA converts very slowly and inefficiently to EPA. In animals, the situation is more variable. For example, with cats, ALA essentially does not convert to EPA and is without health benefits. In dogs, the conversion is poor and in both cases is dependent on the amount of bad fat (omega-6 fatty acid) that is present. Therefore, products containing ALA should be considered inactive, without benefits and without value to our pets' health.

Quality and Potency of omega-3 oils for Pets:
Most omega-3 oils for pets are of a low quality and strength. The pet oils are either rich in ALA or are derived from salmon fish oil with low percentages of active omega-3, EPA and DHA (9%). For these reasons, The Maine Natural Health Company has developed high potency omega-3 oil just for pets. OmegaMaine Pet is human quality (pharmaceutical grade) oil with a high percentage of EPA and DHA (77%).

Expected Therapeutic Benefits for your pet:

  1. Decrease joint inflammation and arthritis
  2. Decrease itchy skin (puritus), dry skin, dull and brittle hair coats
  3. Decrease the acquisition and progression of kidney disease (especially cats)
  4. Decrease ventricular arrhythmias (especially dogs)
  5. Decrease miliary dermatitis and eosinophilic granuloma (cats)
  6. Decrease hyperlipidemia (especially animals on retinoid therapy)
  7. Increase energy and mobility (especially in older animals)
  8. Increase mental alertness
