While migraines can be difficult to treat, there are things that may help to prevent them. Identifying and avoiding triggers, such as food sensitivities, caffeine, and hormonal imbalances can be helpful in preventing them.
In a German study, adults who took 600mg magnesium daily for a month had a 42% drop in migraine frequency, duration, and intensity.* Magnesium and calcium can reduce the severity of blood vessel spasms and prevent the onset of a migraine. Feverfew can reduce migraine frequency in about two thirds of cases ** Vitamins B2, B3, B6, C and E can also help and appear to work by preventing vasoconstriction or inhibiting blood platelet clumping, which occur during attacks.
High estrogen levels can raise insulin output, leading to migraines linked to the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptives. Correcting hormone imbalances can play a key role in the prevention of migraines. Supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids and B group vitamins (especially B6) can help to avoid female sex hormone fluctuations, along with hormone supplementation when necessary. Omega 3's also inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which contribute to migraine pain.***
