Mirtazapine: Effective and Convenient | Print |  E-mail
Mirtazapine is a member of the "tetracyclic" class of antidepressants that was developed for human use for moderate to severe depression. It acts to increase norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain.

While there is a definite need for anti-anxiety medication in veterinary medicine, it is the side effects of many of these medications that mirtazapine a desirable option for animals.Mirtazapine has strong anti-nausea properties due to its action upon the neuroreceptors in the intestine and stomach tha communicate with the vomit center of the brain. It also acts as a potent appetite stimulant. These properties make mirtazapine extremely beneficial in the treatment of many medical conditions.

Mirtazapine is used in the treatment of conditions where poor appetite and nausea go together, such as in intestinal/stomach disease, and liver or kidney disease. It can also be used to alleviate the nausea/appetite loss that accompanies the treatment of cancer by chemotherapy.

If liver or kidney disease are present, the clearance of this drug from the body is reduced by approximately 30% so dose titration should be implemented. This is especially important in cats with liver disease, such as hepatic lipdosis or hepatitis. Cats are only dosed twice a week with mirtazapine which makes it extremley convenient for the owner and less stressful for that cat than other medications which require daily adminitration. *
