Beans is a 13 1/2 year old neutered chihuahua. He has previously been diagnosed with pituitary dependent hyperadrenalcorticism (Cushings Disease). This caused Beans to have very elevated liver enzymes. He also has a grade 5/6 heart murmur and an enlarged heart and is taking 2 medications for his heart condition. Beans started to have seizures in January. At first he seizured about once a week, but soon he was having them daily. The owner's veterinarian was reluctant to put him on traditional seizure medicine, such as phenobarbital, because of his already elevated liver enzymes. They decided to try zonisamide. Because of his size, Beans required a special dose of zonisamide which we were able to provide for him. Within a few doses of the medication the seizures stopped. His owners state that if he misses a dose of zonisamide he will have a seizure, but is otherwise doing well. Bean's owners are grateful that they can improve his quality of life by preventing his seizures while they deal with his other medical issues.
