Nutritional Supplements for Chronic Pain

 

While prescription medications work wonders for controlling pain, there may be more you can be doing. The following dietary supplements may help control some of your symptoms and may be a powerful addition to your  medication regimen.

  •     EPA/DHA-Prevents the production and  overproduction of inflammatory cells, useful in  inflammatory based pain such as Rheumatoid  Arthritis.
  •    Alpha Lipoic Acid- An antioxidant that may decrease damage done to the body by oxidative stress, useful in polyneuropathies including those caused by diabetes as well as kidney and liver  disease.
  •    Magnesium- An essential mineral that has an important role in over 300 metabolic reactions in the body and may be helpful in treating migraine headaches, Restless Leg Syndrome and  musculoskeletal pain. Magnesium Glycinate salts  are well-tolerated without GI issues and are our first choice for magnesium supplementation.
  •    N-Acetyl Cysteine- Helps regulate the body's stores of glutathione, a potent antioxidant. May decrease the body's perception of pain through alternate pathways, helpful in pain associated  with tissue damage.
  •    Vitamin D- Strengthens the immune system as well as bone structure, may help pain associated with  autoimmune disease
